RAWLINS — How long is too long to wait?
A Rawlins resident took advantage of an opportunity to speak to the Rawlins City Council during their regular meeting on Tuesday, April 16.
Derrick Morse said that having executive session at the beginning of the agenda is not being very respectful of the public’s time and that city officials should keep that in mind moving forward.
After the council’s workshop, a motion to move into executive session was approved at 7:47 p.m., on Tuesday, April 16. A motion to move out of executive session was approved by 8:51 p.m.
While Morris expressed appreciation for the council’s time to discuss confidential matters, he also pointed out that the public’s time is “also precious.”
He mentioned that having an hour-long executive session “causes some problems” for those attending the council meeting to make presentations or accept a board position, which should take about two minutes.
He noted that attendees were sitting for two hours or more “twiddling their thumbs,” waiting for the council to move on with the agenda.
“That should be at the end of meeting, not at the beginning,” said Morris. “Your time is precious and so is everybody else’s.”
He added, “There’s plenty other things I’m sure I could probably go off on, but that was the biggest thing this evening. I don’t think that’s how Robert’s Rule of Order works.”
Robert’s Rule of Order is the official guide of conduct for various entities. It is used by more professional associations, fraternal organizations, and local governments than any other authority.
The next Rawlins City Council will be held in city chambers on Tuesday, May 7.{p class=”Paragraph SCXW15891970 BCX0”}{/div}
